Ricky Gervais's Golden Globes gig splits the critics The British comic was in typical unapologetic form in his first crack at compering the august awards ceremonyIt was a mixed night for the Brits at the Golden Globes. On the one hand, Emily Blunt, Carey Mulligan and Colin Firth missed out on awards. On the other, Sherlock Holmes won his first prize since the 1890 Detective of the Year awards. Meanwhile, right in the middle – both celebrated and castigated – was the host, our very own Ricky Gervais.After a string of amusing cameos at previous awards ceremonies, Gervais had been selected as the first Globes host in 15 years (in the past, they used a Tannoy system). You can watch the edited highlights of his stint in the video above; opinion seems to be split on whether he pulled it off."The first hour chugged along with assembly-line efficiency, including Gervais, whose opening minutes were disappointingly toothless," wrote Andrew Wallenstein of the Hollywood Reporter this morning. "He tackled predictable subjects: satirising self-promotion by plugging DVDs for his own creations; tossing off banal generalities about the unimportance of actors; [and] small-penis yuks. But Gervais flew through all of them so fast he didn't land a blow, let alone draw blood."Wallenstein's sniffy critique is shared by Maureen Ryan of the Chicago Tribune. "[Gervais] didn't make much of an impression as host," she wrote, "except when he was biting the hands of those who'd invited him to play ringmaster at the somewhat subdued ceremony."The chorus of disapproval was rounded out by the New York Times, who also criticised his opening monologue: "Mr Gervais's banter [was] relatively tame at the opening of the show, aside from some off-colour patter about his private parts." Industry blogger Nikki Finke chimed in too: "Gervais makes penis jokes, and the audience laughs uncomfortably. What a terrible start."Step away from the more august publications, however, and opinions on Gervais were generally more positive. TMZ.com revelled in Gervais's mockery of Mel Gibson (generally perceived to be his best gag of the night): "Mel Gibson, DUI Jokes – still funny … Then again, everything Ricky Gervais has said during the Golden Globes has been hysterical."Best Week Ever concurred in its liveblog: "Ricky Gervais makes a joke calling Mel Gibson a drunk, and seriously is killing the crowd." It followed up later on with another post, "Ricky Gervais is seriously causing a record number of LOLz tonight." Lolz is internet speak for yuks.Despite the split verdict, it seems unlikely Gervais will need consoling this morning, such is his general antipathy towards critical opinion. If he does however, he can at least turn to the words of one Mickey Rourke. "I thought Ricky Gervais was cool," said The Wrestler.
